REVIEW OF HOW THE ANIMAL FARM SPEAKS TO THE 4 BROAD THEMATIC AREAS OF FOCUS OF THE CtD. By: Malomo Abosede Oyeyemi

The book ANIMAL FARM, brings the corrupting influence of power in our society to light, our society is dominated by leaders like Napoleon who uses force to intimidate the people. Leaders like Squealer, so cunning in manipulating the masses with lies and make beliefs. Selfish leaders are the reason behind the masses suffering and loss of self-worth. Leadership position should not be given to just anybody but to those who have proven records of patriotism and records of community development projects.
Snowball, an example of leaders that are intelligent, passionate, eloquent and less subtle would helped in giving the people a better governance but was outwitted when Napoleon convinces the rest to get rid of him. How can our society improve when bad leaders remain in power? Leaders whose only motive and agenda is to dominate, oppress and subject the general masses to hardship while he alone with his cabinet lavish the wealth of the land. As citizens, we ought to be interested in the affairs of our Nation, dedication only is not enough to deliver what is rightfully ours into our hands like Boxer. We must be dedicated and be ready to get involved in the nitty gritty of governance.
We must refuse monopolisation of the Nation’s resources and false statistics of the Nation’s success as tendered by our leaders. How do we fight what we don’t know? How do refuse if we have no understanding? How can we refuse their lies if we can’t even remember what is stated in our constitution like Clover? Our natural resources are being sold out to other countries in exchange for foreign currencies while the masses reel in abject poverty. Involvement is key, knowledge is paramount if we plan to see a working Nation, the knowledge must also be passed down to the next generation so they can run the race right.
The likes of Benjamin in a society helps injustice to linger on, people who firmly believes that life will remain unpleasant no matter who is in power. Benjamin alone comprehend the changes that took place on the farm when Napoleon became the leader but he was not willing to oppose the pigs. When our voices remain silent, we suffer.
The dogs raised by Napoleon can be likened to our children, who is raising them? Society has turned most women to breadwinners, wards are raised with so many negative standards, parents have neglected their parenting role to supplying daily needs. What are those wards learning? They have been cornered by politicians, militants and loaded with lies to suit their evil plans. Our own children have been used against us, they have wandered in different directions and we know nothing about how far they have gone. We must raise our wards ourselves and teach them values that will bless our Nation. They need our help and we need them to have a sustainable future.
No female was seen leading the Animal Farm, even Mrs Jones was only mentioned like once, gender inequality. The irony of a man (Mr Whymper), serving Animals as their solicitor cannot be overlooked. How can? When power is in the wrong hands, the lesser rules the greater, the fools rules the wise, the wicked rules the righteous and the list goes on.
How can we make sure those in power don’t misuse it? What are we to do? Every citizen of any Nation must rise up and speak out against tyranny before it is too late. We must do it now before lies become the rule, we must get involved in politics from the grassroots. Politics is not for a few; it is everyone’s business. We must start to raise our wards towards familiarizing with civic right; we can’t live wishing for a better tomorrow but to work towards a better tomorrow.
